2009 Spirituality
So recently I’ve had several similar conversations with people on
the vague topic of spirituality. Normally these are not
conversations I would have with people, but somewhat as I merge into
the social group of my room-mates, it’s inevitable that I talk about
deep/personal things with both my roommates themselves as well as
any friends of theirs (who are becoming friends of mine of course)
who I see regularly. It’s all a part of Creating a Common Culture
as an aspect of making friends. The conversations tend to run in a
similar vein, though that may be because I have a tendency to
dominate some types of conversations. I don’t think it’s the case
that I’m directing these things though; most people do seem to have
some opinion on the matter and are ok talking about how things might
or not be (they do not need to necessarily have any sort of
religious belief based on how things may or may not be, but they
probably have ideas about how reality might function.) It seems
most people who I talk to believe there is at least some sort of
spiritual energy or world which currently we cannot understand or
define. It seems to be an acceptable thought to people that we may
never be able to define or entirely understand this other side of
things. I’m not entirely sure what my point in bringing this up
is. I guess I’m just surprised at how many people are willing to
admit the possibility that there is more to living and life than
what we can explain in conventional terms. More so, most people
will even say they believe there is some sort of energy, maybe in
ghosts, higher god-like beings, or spirits. Usually this is about
as far as the conversations get because we begin to enter the touchy
grounds of religions and beliefs beyond simple philosophy (which is
essentially what talking about the possibilities is.) I do usually
mention that I am Christian just so the other person knows where I’m
coming from and what I think about things. Just as with being
surprised at how many people accept spirituality, I’ve encountered
no hostility at all to my being Christian. This pleases me as in
the past I definitely have met some serious aggression at my openly
admitting to being a practice Christian (not that it really bothers
me, I kind of expect it.)
I’ve also been finding that I can blend in much of
my education into making a good case for there being not only
“higher beings” but there being certain gods or possibly even a
single god/God. A lot of it rests in other things I’ve discussed in
other blogs, but in short, if there is infinite matter/mass/material
in the universe (and modern physics suggests there is infinite
material) then every arrangement of things which can happen must
happen. Most of these arrangements will be outside our
understanding or otherwise be very unstable and might not last so
long. But again, given the infinite, some of them will last forever
despite being hard to “understand” or any lack of stability. Next,
if any sort of “descent with modification” (as Darwin would put it,
since I’d like to avoid the loaded word Evolution,) takes place,
then given infinite possibilities, something will develop with
change toward things which humans can’t understand. Maybe some
beings could live in the magnetic fields of stars or in the
semi-liquid crusts of giant rocky planets. These would be tricky
for us to grasp. Maybe, further yet, some being lives in energy
patterns. There has been research which suggests certain energy
patterns can be made in such a way that they contain their own
energy within the very pattern they form. As example, imagine a
battery that stores energy, but the battery itself is made of
energy, instead of some sort of physical stuff. Personally, I think
straight from the “anything that can happen must happen” idea it’s
clear (a) god/God COULD exist. That’s the definition of
“anything.” But some people need convincing. Anyway, and I don’t
know any good argument against this so far, if anything must happen,
some sort of being which has the ability to alter what happens on a
significant scale must exist. Mind you, “significant” would be
pretty big, probably affecting entire galaxies if not all of
reality. This seems like a god to me. There’s more explanation
than this, but I know I don’t usually read blogs that are over about
500 words just for my amusement and this one is 750+, so I won’t
keep any of my possible readers any further.
